However, it really depends on the farmer. Most calves do not grow up with their mothers, as the milk that is produced is used for human consumption and not calves. If calves were allowed to drink the milk, the farmer would not make any money. That, and the fact that most calves are used for veal, is one of the main reasons I became vegan. Even the best farmers who allow their calves to be raised for future dairy production or meat are still prevented from bonding with their mothers, and the process of taking a calf away from their mothers are traumatic for both the mother and baby. I am heartbroken to learn and see the cruelty they are subjected to. I gave up on dairy yesterday. When will we learn to be humane!? When will profit learn that a big percentage of customers do not want to support inhumane practices of farming. At least the voice of our wallet will suggest new ways of farming. I've been cuckolded so far into supporting this horror. No more. Murder is murder, there's nothing humane about that. When a cow is..."Rape stands", good grief. When a cow is in heat and ready to be bred, either by live bull or artificial insemination, she will happily seek out pregnancy. In fact, she will even allow other female cows to mount her, in the hopes that she'll be bred. There is no "rape" involved in this process, nor is it stressful for the cow. As far as being bred "5 or 6 times until she doesn't take", you can actually expect a good dairy cow to carry 10 or more pregnancies in her lifetime, which is a normal reproductive lifespan for an herbivore. And not all dairy cows are shipped to slaughter at retirement, especially with companies like Organic Valley. Many older milk cows are sold to small family homesteads for folks who want to keep one or two cows for family milk consumption, and who don't mind the lower production rates of a cow past her prime.

And no, sorry. We are not the "only species of animal that extract excretions from other animals to consume". Barn cats line up during the milking time to get their squirts from cow and goat udders. Baby horses will nurse on dairy goats, which is cross-species "extraction of excretions" (Actually, I think you're looking for SECRETIONS, not "excretions"). I've even seen cows and goats nurse on themselves because they like the milk! You must live under a rock in Los Angeles.

Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5398396671709195379.post-90916174124064124462013-06-22T03:45:39.191-04:002013-06-22T03:45:39.191-04:00So am I to understand that farmers part of Organic...So am I to understand that farmers part of Organic Valley are not to have the male calves raised in crates for veal? I just drove to and from Bodega Bay and passed an organic Valley dairy farm where rows of what looked like little plastic huts were with calves in them. Granted they each had a tiny outside pen but still not what I would consider access to pasture or would even let a calf stretch and be able to do more then let them freely turn around. I guess I been looking for the farm that doesn't exist. One where cows are 1000% free, get pregnant naturally, are allowed to raise and feed their calf, and whatever milk is left is for human consumption. Their babies are send to the slaughter and them too after they can't produce milk. Plants suffer too. (There is research showing that plants exhibit hormonal distress responses when damaged, dehydrated,or doused with chemicals) Everything that lives must
die. I couldn't believe his response to my questions!

We have an incredible basil plant growing on the back porch and the market tomatoes are amazing right now. I am a vegan but the other day my partner asked if I could pick her up some Mozzarella cheese for a sandwich. So this morning I visited Blue Ridge Dairy Company at the Burke Farmers Market. We have purchased from them in the past and were really excited to find a local dairy producer. However, my encounter with the owner, Paul Stephan, today was completely horrible and I will never purchase anything from them ever again.

I walked up to the booth and asked them about their cheese making process. I wanted to know how the cows were treated to get the milk and make these products. Immediately he seemed completely annoyed at my interest/questions. He said, “We are actually only the creamery. We buy all our milk from a farm in Maryland.” So I asked if he knew their process and how they got the milk from their cows. With his tone starting to grow louder he says, “What do you mean process? That is a very vague question.” …. “Well, how does the farm get the milk from their cows, are they hooked to machines all day or….” He cut me off, almost yelling now, “NO cows anywhere are hooked up to machines all day!” …. “Sir, actually factory farm cows are hooked up to machines all day and forced to produce more milk than their bodies are supposed to on their own.” He responds, louder still, “That is just completely Untrue! You have no idea what you are talking about! You are an idiot!” I was completely taken back. I had never experienced this before – especially at a farmers market! I have talked to almost every farmer about their process and they have been happy to share. So I explained that I will not be purchasing anything from him to today or any products ever again and start to walk away. He yells after me “Good! Tell all your friends! You don’t know what you are talking about!!” I turn around and say “Your defensiveness of this conversation tells me that your company is run exactly like this.” He responds with “What this tells me is that you are a Moron.”
I cannot even believe this happened. When I asked him his name, explaining that I was going to file a complaint with the owner he says “My name is none of your damn business and I am the owner.” The young boy – young meaning 12 or younger – ended up telling me his name and yes, in fact he is the owner.

I will be filing a complaint with the Burke Market and the Maryland farm that they purchase from. This man gives a complete negative representation of his company, the Maryland farm, the farmers market and further solidifies my values to not support the dairy industry. If he was not purchasing from a factory farm then there should not have been any issue with simply explaining the process to me without yelling and calling names. He also is teaching that young boy that it is ok to verbally abuse people when you don’t agree with them. I am honestly still shocked.

I will be filing a complaint with the Burke Market and I would love to also do so with the the Maryland Farm they purchase from. Could you share the name of the farm?

I am sorry that you had this experience but am happy to find this post. Thank you so much for sharing!
MVKirinhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/18099446669503332553noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5398396671709195379.post-84840213000523542892012-07-27T14:57:34.620-04:002012-07-27T14:57:34.620-04:00Your message would be more sincere if you actually...Your message would be more sincere if you actually ate humane meat.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5398396671709195379.post-12411277351985833262012-07-07T20:27:21.976-04:002012-07-07T20:27:21.976-04:00Thank you do much.
